Spinal Concussion Injuries

Spinal concussion injuries may occur when the neck is rapidly forced forward and backward beyond its normal range of motion, commonly during motor vehicle collisions. This movement may injure facet joints, cause disc bulges, disc protrusions, disc herniations, sprain ligaments and strain muscles.
Symptoms may include headaches, neck pain, sharp radiating pain into the shoulders, upper extremities, paraesthesia (numbness. and tingling), stiffness, soreness, shoulder discomfort, and reduced range of motion in the neck and upper back regions of the spine. Chiropractic care addresses joint mobility and restriction, muscular tension, and spinal alignment to support recovery.
Treatment plans are based on injury severity, clinical findings, and individual response to care.
FAQ
Q1. How long do spinal concussion symptoms usually last?
A: Recovery time varies. Some individuals improve within weeks, while others may require longer care depending on the severity of the injury.
Q2. Is imaging always required for spinal concussion injuries?
A: Imaging is determined based on clinical evaluation and individual presentation. Not all cases require imaging. Patient understanding that an x-ray may only show bone structure, at time, MRI imaging may be needed to evaluate the extent of a disc injury or fact injury. CT scans may also be need for further evaluation of the bone structures of the spine or other bones.
